To AI or Not To AI

Writer: Mike DewhirstMike Dewhirst

It is hard to believe that I haven't created a post in over year. A lot has happened in this past year: COVID-19 continues to evolve, continued to work mostly remote, created some art (but not as much as I wish I would have), and there have been a lot of advancements in AI...good or bad the jury is still out on that.

Over the year I have been trying to think about what to write about all of this AI art generation as an artist. I have mixed feelings about it. In one sense it is really coo to to just express in words what you want and then see it created in a matter of seconds. And then there is the artist side that is like, it takes me sometimes days or months to finalize a painting that expresses the feelings or thoughts I have in my head.

I think as as an artist it is something I need to embrace, and that may not be for everyone, but for me to stay relevant in my career and staying on top of current technology trends it is a must for me. I don't know how many have seen my posts on Instagram from both DALL•E 2 and Midjourney, but here they are. They are stupid and silly but they were fun to create but less satisfying than actually creating something on a canvas for me.

I do think there are some copyright concerns, that I am sure will be addressed in the future, but for now it is a playground and when we were kids in the playground we just had fun. So, I plan on having fun for now.
